A sound meter is a device used to measure the intensity of a sound, often expressed in decibels (dB). Sound meters are used by audio engineers and musicians to help ensure that their work will meet minimum dynamic range standards. They can also be used in film or theater to assist with setting the proper volume levels for playback, as well as by law enforcement officials to determine whether or not noise violations have been committed.

There are a number of desktop sound meter software programs available, but most are only available for Windows and Mac OS X. Some popular options include:

AudioTools 2 (Windows)

SoundCheck (Mac OS X)

There are quite a few sound meter software programs that you can use to get your audio levels right. Here are some popular choices:

Sound Forge (by Sony) is a popular tool for recording, editing, and mastering audio files. It has a built-in meter that lets you see the levels of your incoming and outgoing audio signals. You can also use it to monitor important details like peak amplitude, maximum level, and average loudness.

WaveLab Pro (by Steinberg) is another powerful audio editor with a built-in meter that lets you monitor incoming and outgoing levels as well as details like peak amplitude and average loudness. It also provides visual feedback on how loud the current selection is relative to other parts of the song or album.

Audacity (by Audacity Team) is an open source sound editor that’s widely used by podcasters everywhere because it’s free and easy to use (although there’s also an Audacity Pro version available). There’s no built-in meter in Audacity, but it does have a plugin called Levelator that can analyze any track’s volume level so that you know if your recording is too soft or too loud before exporting it as an MP3 file
