Esports, or electronic sports, is a form of competition that is facilitated by electronic systems, particularly video games. Most commonly, esports takes the form of organized, multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between professional players. Although organized online and offline competitions have long been a part of video game culture, these were largely between amateurs until the late 2000s when participation by professional gamers and spectatorship in these events through live streaming saw a large surge in popularity.
The most common video game genres associated with esports are real-time strategy (RTS), fighting, first-person shooter (FPS), and multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA). Popular competitions include the League of Legends World Championship, The International 2018 and the Evolution Championship Series.
Most major professional sports leagues around the world have an official esports league or tournament system. Some games require players to pay a fee to compete in tournaments or leagues. These fees are often used to cover server costs or prize pools for winners.
Though some games are played professionally without charge, these generally become popular only after commercialization or after the release of sequels supporting competitive play
